Notas En los documentos de referencia histórica, solo existen dos menciones a esta obra –[Documentos 1920- 1951], p. 7 y 204–; una indica que ella no había sido devuelta por Joaquín F. Dávila (seudónimo de Carlos Peláez de Justo), a la sazón uno de los directores de la revista Continente (1947-1955) donde apareció reproducida en noviembre de 1949; la otra mención indica que había sido dada en pago a Dávila. El pago mencionado debe referirse al pago por la reproducción de la obra y/o por la inclusión en la revista del prólogo de Jorge Luis Borges para su exposición en Galería Samos de ese mismo año. Este mismo documento informa sobre la numeración asignada a la pintura dentro del conjunto de obras realizadas en 1949, el número “20”, que no aparece inscripto en ella y no se ha podido verificar si este aparece o aparecía en su reverso. Observaciones Hasta donde sabemos, fue a fines de la década de 1940 que Xul comenzó a realizar él mismo los marcos de madera para sus pinturas los que, tratados de manera artesanal, traducían a ese nivel ciertas características de los marcos tradicionales: por ejemplo, el empleo de un contramarco (generalmente pintado de blanco), la parte inferior más ancha que la superior. Asimismo, muchos de estos marcos fueron pintados de un color rosado con el listón interior en blanco, como sucede en Peñas (Cat. 907) o en varios de los óleos sobre vidrio realizados entre 1952 y 1953. Tanto en el caso de Cuatro plurentes como de Trece san Mástiles (Cat. 862) estos marcos presentan una particularidad ya que la obra se extiende sobre él que ahora resulta integrado a pintura. Se trata de una variable sobre un método de trabajo que había empleado a fines de los años diez y comienzos de la década de 1920, donde la acuarela también actuaba, modificándolo, sobre el soporte elegido para el papel, en general una cartulina de color (véase por ejemplo, Angels, (Cat. 329). Notas En 1981 tres fueron las obras adquiridas con destino al MNBA: Piai (1923), Predicador (1926) y Cuevas (1948); se trató de la primera vez que el MNBA adquirió obras de Xul Solar, lo habían precedido el Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes de La Plata (1932) y el Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires (1970). Observaciones La indicación del título Cuevas (1) realizada por Micaela Cadenas, pareciera indicar que, siguiendo su práctica de diferenciar ciertas obras a partir de una numeración agregada, existe otra versión de esta pintura o que por lo menos compartía el título. En la página 204 del documento [Exposiciones 1920-1951], ella indica a continuación de esta obra, otra con las mismas medidas y año de ejecución.
